The CarpenBarry Company: Empowering Young Performers Through Inclusivity and Creativity

The CarpenBarry Company is a new musical theatre training program that's taking root in Grand Rapids. Founded by Elizabeth Barry in 2022, the program seeks to empower young performers through an inclusive and collaborative approach to learning.

Before founding CarpenBarry, Elizabeth was the co-founder of Grand Rapids Voice Collective, a voice lessons program that also focused on inclusivity and diversity. This experience has carried over to CarpenBarry, where they work hard to create a welcoming environment where students of all backgrounds can thrive.

Students receive training in singing, dancing, and acting, as well as guidance in audition techniques and professional development. What sets The CarpenBarry Company apart is their commitment to fostering an environment where students can fail with support, knowing that failure is a necessary step in the learning process. By providing a space where students can take risks and learn from their mistakes, performers growth and develop skills and confidence both on and off the stage. Students feel encouraged to bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the table, and to work together to create something truly special.

One of CarpenBarry's former students, Jaelyn Raiford, spoke highly of the program and Elizabeth's coaching in a recent interview with Local Spins in 2022. Raiford said this, talking about her performance of Sally Bowles in Cabaret: "'I feel like the only reason I had as much confidence as I did while doing the role is because I got to work with Elizabeth on it.'” She then took that confidence and was accepted into the prestigious Milwaukee Repertory Theatre's apprentice program. "'Having voice lessons is what helps me to focus and keep my practice consistent.' And even though it’s been a while, Barry and Raiford still keep up. 'I keep in touch with her sometimes — sometimes as a voice teacher, and sometimes as a friend,' Raiford said."

Our website offers more information about the program's offerings and philosophy. If you're a young performer looking to develop your skills and connect with a supportive community, CarpenBarry may be the right fit for you.
